Graves disease is a rare, sometimes life-threatening, autoimmune (immune system) disorder that affects the thyroid resulting in the overproduction of thyroid hormones.

Hyperthyroidism is also known as overactive thyroid, and sometimes hyperthyroidism is referred to as thyrotoxicosis.

Hypothyroidism, also known as underactive thyroid, is a common condition resulting from a decreased production of crucial thyroid hormones by the thyroid gland.
