What are Joint Injections?

Joint injections are medical procedures used to deliver medication directly into a joint or the surrounding area. There are different types of injections that can be used to treat pain and inflammation associated with arthritis and other joint conditions. These procedures are typically performed in the physician’s office under local anesthesia, ensuring patient comfort and convenience. The injections are administered directly into the joints, bursas, and/or around the tendons, allowing for targeted relief.

In some cases, joint aspiration may be required before the injection. This involves removing fluid from a swollen joint using a needle, which can help relieve symptoms and allow the doctor to determine the cause of the swelling. The aspirated fluid may be sent for analysis to guide further treatment.

Types of Joint Injections

The different types of injections used in our office are tailored to treat various conditions such as arthritis, bursitis, or tendonitis.

The most common types of joint injections we provide include:

  • Corticosteroids or Cortisone: These powerful anti-inflammatory medications can significantly reduce joint pain and swelling.
  • Hyaluronic Acid: Also known as viscosupplementation, this injection helps lubricate the joint and improve mobility.
  • Lidocaine: A local anesthetic that provides immediate pain relief and can be used diagnostically.
  • Traumeel and Zeel: Homeopathic options that can offer natural pain relief with minimal side effects.

Each of these injections can provide extended pain relief, improving the quality of life for patients suffering from chronic joint conditions. The choice of injection depends on the specific diagnosis, the severity of symptoms, and the patient’s overall health status.
