About Robert Merz, MD
Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in Cardiovascular Disease and Internal Medicine, Robert H. Merz, MD, is a graduate of Vassar College in New York and Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts. He completed his internship and residency in echocardiography at the UCSF School of Medicine in San Francisco, followed by a clinical cardiology fellowship at the Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles with an additional Nuclear Cardiology training year.
Dr. Merz has been at the Pacific Heart Institute since 1989 while also remaining active in outpatient and inpatient echocardiography, including transesophageal studies. His non-invasive imaging experience is of particular value in the evaluation and management of cardiomyopathies, valvular heart disease, and coronary artery disease. The triathlete and swimming communities consult with him from time-to-time regarding identifying the “athletic heart” and assessing cardiovascular risk through athlete screening.
Dr. Merz is an avid swimmer and boater, and he has been a member of the Southern California Aquatic Master’s Program for nearly 20 years. He and his wife, C. Noel Bairey-Merz, MD, a prominent researcher of cardiovascular disease in women, have three charming young adult daughters.
