About Janie Weng Grumley, MD

Certified by the American Board of Surgery, Janie G. Grumley, MD, is a surgical breast oncologist with expertise in treating patients with breast cancer and benign breast diseases. She specializes in unique treatments such as oncoplastic breast-conserving surgery and intraoperative radiation therapy.

After growing up with a grandmother who had a mastectomy, Dr. Grumley knew from personal experience how deforming and emotionally scarring the operation could be. Her goal is to improve the odds for her patients and save them from experiences similar to the one her grandmother had. Her favorite part of being a physician is meeting patients and their families. She feels that the relationship between the patient surgeon creates a unique bond. Unlike with most other types of surgery, the relationship she has with her patients continues over time through surgery and follow-ups. Dr. Grumley feels that nothing is more rewarding than seeing patients thriving years after breast cancer.

Dr. Grumley received her Bachelor of Science degree in Sports Medicine from Pepperdine University in Malibu, California. She then earned her medical doctorate at the Keck School of Medicine University of Southern California. She completed her General Surgery Internship and Residency at the LAC & USC Medical Center in Los Angeles, where she became the Administrative Chief Resident of General Surgery at LAC & USC Medical Center. She also became a Surgical Breast Oncology Fellow at the University of Southern California and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS).

In her third year of residency, Dr. Grumley met her hero, a surgical breast oncologist at the University of Southern California who was transforming breast cancer care using oncoplastic surgery. This novel surgery often eliminated deformities that affected women after breast surgery. The difference these techniques made in women’s lives during and after treatment was so inspiring that she knew this was the right path.

Dr. Grumley’s extensive experience in oncoplastic surgery allows her to perform cancer surgery using techniques that allow for cancer treatment while simultaneously preserving the breast’s esthetics. She has published numerous articles on oncoplastic surgery showing how this technique reduces the need for mastectomy and additional operations, even in patients with large breast cancers. Not only can these techniques preserve the appearance of the breast, but she has also shown that these techniques have a lower risk of surgical complications.

Dr. Grumley was a successful competitive figure skater who traveled the world, so when not with her patients, it’s no surprise to find her in the ice rink with her children, who figure skate and play hockey. She loves cooking and spending time with her family. They all enjoy traveling together when they get the chance.
